Glycolic Acid & TCA Peels

Q:Glycolic Acid Facial Peel

Substances derived from fruit, such as glycolic alpha hydroxy acid, are becoming the natural skin discovery of the decade. The Glyco-Citrate peel that we use is made from a combination of glycolic acid and natural fruit oils derived from fruits and sugar cane. The Glyco-Citrates are similar to the natural process that occurs in wine fermentation, where a fruit acid from grapes called tartaric acid is produced.

Q:What Conditions Can Be Treated with Glycolic Acid Peel?

Repeated application of the Glyco-Citrate peel has been shown by dermatologic research to help reduce many of the effects of photoaging such as fine lines, pigmented spots, rough or scaling blemishes, sun lines, and age spots, as well as enhance the overall texture and smoothness of the skin.

The Glyco-Citrate peel also offers rewarding results when used for acne clogged pores, and melasma.

Q:What are the Advantages of This Peel?

The Glyco-Citrate peel is safe, non-toxic, reliable, and extremely effective. Usually skin improvement will be seen within as little as one or two weeks, versus 6-12 months of bleaching creams or Retin-A.

There is no recuperation time needed for the Glyco-Citrate peel, and it is inexpensive compared to the trichloroacetic acid peel. Cosmetic results will be much the same.

This peel can safely be used on a broad range of candidates, including Black and Asian skin, teenagers, and mature skin.

Q:How is it Applied?

The peel is individualized for your skin type and applied to the face by the doctor. You will be instructed when to wash it off. The side effects are minimal. You may notice some tingling, but it is not unbearable.

There is no fixed number of facials that are recommended. You will decide when the desired cosmetic result is satisfactory.

However, a series of six of these peels, ideally one to two weeks apart, has shown outstanding results. In the future, a freshening peel every few months while continuing to use the at-home products may be needed to maintain maximum benefit.

Q:Home Maintenance Program

At home, you will use a cream or lotion which is also derived from fruit acids, which will provide continual treatment. We offer a complete line of home maintenance products for each individual skin type.

Q:Trichloroacetic Acid Peel

The trichloroacetic acid, (TCA) peel, is used to remove the thick outer layer of skin so that a new layer of skin can be revealed. The solution, when applied to the skin, causes blisters to form and eventually peel, leaving a smoother surface.

Q:What Conditions Can Be Treated With Trichloroacetic Acid Peel?

This type of peel is typically performed to improve fine wrinkling over the skin and for around the eyes and mouth, and cheeks. Therapeutic indications for a TCA peel include pre-cancerous lesions such as actinic keratosis (thick, rough, reddish growths).

Q:Is the Procedure Painful?

You may experience a burning sensation when the chemical solution is applied. After surgery, there will be some discomfort that is easily controlled by medication.

Q:What Will the Healing Process Involve?

Sensations such as itching and tingling may be experienced as the skin heals. A crust or scab will develop over the treated area within 24 hours. It is removed with gentle cleansing and application of ointments and creams. Following removal of the crust, the exposed skin will be a deep red color, similar to a severe sunburn.

Q:Facial Peels

Women and men have attempted to improve their looks since the dawn of time. Proof of that can be seen in the writings of the ancient Egyptians, which show recipes for masks and facial rubs to smooth out rough skin and blemishes. Fortunately, modern medicine has brought us new and effective ways of improving the tone of our skin. One of those methods is the facial peel. Facial peels involve the application of chemicals to erase lines and furrows, and give a youthful characteristic to the skin. It is a safe, relatively painless procedure that allows for a dramatic improvement.

In our office, we offer two types of facial peels, the glycolic acid peel and the trichlorocetic acid peel.

Conditions that can be treated with facial peels include:

  • Visible wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Sun damage
  • Melasma (discoloration) due to sun, age, pregnancy or birth control pills
  • Acne and acne scars
  • Rough, dry skin
  • Oily skin
  • Uneven skin tone

This will gradually lighten to pink, and in several weeks an entirely new skin will have developed. This is when you will begin to notice the results of the procedure.

Q:How Much Improvement Can Be Expected?

After recuperation, you will notice tighter, smoother skin that is relatively free of blemishes and wrinkles in the treated areas. The skin will have a younger, fresher appearance. While 100% improvement is not possible, most patients view the results as dramatic.

Q:Are There Any Risks Involved With This Procedure?

Complications such as infection, scarring, and abnormal pigmentation are rarely seen but can be treated. Poor healing resulting in excessive scar formation may necessitate a second operation. Risk of complication can be minimized by closely following the doctor’s advice on follow-up care during the healing process.
